What You Can Do to Reduce Your Risk
AT HOME
- Install a peephole and use it.
- Use your first initial on mailboxes and in the phone book.
- Do not give out personal information on the telephone.
- Close and lock doors and windows.
- Require identification of repair people.
- Do not open the door to strangers.
IN YOUR CAR
- Keep doors locked at all times.
- Look in the back seat before getting in.
- Have your keys in hand so you don't linger before getting in.
- If you have car trouble, raise the hood, lock yourself in, and wait for the police.
- Do not stop to help a stranded motorist; call the police.
- If you think someone is following you, drive to the nearest public place and blow the horn.
IN GENERAL
- Avoid men who disrespect women.
- Remember you owe nothing more than "thank you"
for an expensive dinner.
- Stay sober.
- Avoid isolated and dark places.
- Don't be afraid to scream or cause a scene.
- Walk with confidence; look alert.
- Take a self defense course.
