What is a Healthy Relationship?
Abusive relationships are based on power and control; healthy relationships are based on equality.
In order to develop a healthy relationship:
- Each person must respect the other and learn to value each other's opinions.
- Individuals must see and treat each other as equals.
- Jealousy and possessiveness are NOT signs of love.
- While disagreement is to be expected within a relationship, jealousy, insults and violence are not acceptable means for resolving conflict. Mutually satisfying resolutions to conflict can be found through negotiation and compromise.
- Each person must accept responsibility for their own actions, admitting when they are wrong.
- Each person must have their own strong sense of self esteem, independent from the relationship.
- The relationship must be based on trust rather than fear.
